Dusk 19

Dusk 19, Oil on Canvas 18" x 24"

Dusk 19 is my most recent painting.  It is the largest  painting I have completed  since my return to oils.

Old habits and a couple tubes of paint, which are also old, became additional challenges on this painting. My initial washes were a bit too wet and took awhile to set-up. It took me a little longer to get the paint applications built up. The tubes of paint mentioned have been around since my college days. Normally paint comes out of the tube the consistency of toothpaste. This paint was stiff. Very stiff. Imagine trying to brush on paint the consistency of a Tootsie Roll. Yep, almost that stiff. I know that I should trash the old paint but, I rationalize, only a few more paintings and I should be through the old tubes of Tootsie Rolls..er, paint.

This painting was completed using Titanium White, Cadmium Yellow Light, Cadmium Yellow Dark, Cadmium Orange (just a smidgeon) and Permanent Blue. Perhaps due to the size of the canvas and certainly due to my learning curve and being to cheap to throw out the old, stiff paint, this work did require two days to complete.
