Rock Cut – Pierce Lake

September Morn at Pierce Lake, Oil on Canvas 16" x 20"

The other day, Clawed Monet allowed me to go with him to paint at Rock Cut State Park. I settled at a spot near the concession stand and boat launch at Pierce Lake. I moved quickly to capture the effect of the light and shadows on the ground around the tree filled picnic area. I thought that I had found a good shaded spot. However, I did not properly account for my direction, where the sun would move and the gaps in the trees above . About an hour into painting, I began to battle the sun shining on my canvas. This made it difficult to properly judge the values of the applied paint. It was too windy to put up my umbrella. I went through a bit of a ballroom dance with my easel to try to keep the easel in shade.
