Plein Air – Rockford Arboretum

October 10, 2010

Rockford Arboretum, Oil on Canvas 12" x 24"

Early October. Although it is a bit chilly, the sun is shining and the colors are starting to turn. No good excuse not to be out painting. Clawed has an appointment with the groomer (also going to be seen by the vet for an ear infection). I am painting alone today.

I decided to stay in town and go to the Rockford Arboretum. It’s a small park adjacent to Aldeen Golf Course. If you are not careful, you will drive right past the entrance. I almost missed the entrance this day as some landscape work is being done near the entrance and they have temporarily removed the park’s sign.

I walked around the park, looking for a scene to paint. I ended up back at the parking lot and decided to paint a scene from there. Convenient, I did not have to lug my gear very far. I decided to try something different and use a “landscape” canvas to record the scene.

As stated, the morning started out chilly. I had to wear my hooded sweat shirt to keep warm when I started this painting. About two thirds of the way through, I was getting too warm and I traded the sweat shirt for a jean shirt. By the time I finished, I was down to my tee shirt. Not too unusual for this time of year.

I missed  Clawed’s company today, but enjoyed the painting session.
