Windswept – Day 2

November 4, 2010

Pumpkin and Mum's 2, Oil on Canvas 14" x 11"

I had hoped to get outside. The previous day was very, very windy, yet a lot of leaves remained on the trees. I really wanted to get outside and paint while some color still remained on the trees.

Not today. Strong gusts and steady winds of 20-30 mph made this another inside day. Another autumn still life. But today, I added a twist.

It was sunny and clear, but windy. I set up a simple still life on the picnic table on our deck. I set up my easel in the kitchen and painted a view looking out the kitchen window (blocked easy access to the sink, which made life difficult for Helen, but she understands these things).

Shadows moved quicker than I anticipated and as Murphy’s Law would have it, clouds rolled in about halfway through my painting. Oh well, that’s life, or should I say, that’s outdoor still life.
