Shallows’ Ice

Shallows Ice Oil on Canvas 24" x 48"

I have been wanting to do this painting for a long time.   This is of one of my favorite subjects, the site of a canoe launch along the Kishwaukee River. This builds upon the recent painting, River Patterns. I used River Patterns to play with the rhythm of the ice in the shallows. One of the challenges of this work was to keep from doing too much to the ice pattern. I did not it to over dominate the work but be a design element to lead the viewer into the painting. I did not want it to get overworked and stale. Another challenge is studio related, this piece is wide and my easel is not.
