Teapot Reflections and Tea Kettle

Teapot Reflections – Oil on Canvas – 10″ x 8″

Worked these two designs for my oil painting students. Although both designs use the same elements in the same formation, the format makes a dramatic difference. I urge my students to quickly work at least six thumbnails of the scene. Designs can be worked panning out, zooming in, crop, horizon up, horizon down, alter the format (ex. 8″ x 10″ vs 8″ x 16″, etc.). This forces an artist to look beyond the initial excitement and beyond the obvious. Often I find that the second or third is design is a stronger composition and offers a better opportunity. I find that instead of one painting, I have up to half a dozen or more good opportunities. I do this and hope to convince students of the success. Unfortunately, this lesson is too often neglected by students.
