Autumn Flowers with Apple

August 26, 2018

Autumn Flowers with Apple – Oil on Canvas Panel – 10″ x 8″

Last autumn, on a weekend trip to Door County, my wife purchased a small bouquet of autumn blossoms at a farmers market. For a vase, we improvised and used an empty apple cider container. We brought the flowers and container home with us.

I thought that the flowers were interesting enough to use as a base for a still life prop for my art classes. I left the flowers in the improvised vase. I started this painting as a demonstration for my oil studio class. Did not finish it in class. At my studio it sat while I contemplated how I would finish the painting. Finally realized that the improvised vase was the issue. Perusing my still life props, I found a vase that could be the solution to my dilemma. Though the flowers are long since gone, I was able to impose this vase into the painting. This works for me.

Barn Behind Mulford

August 21, 2018

Barn Behind Mulford – Oil on Canvas Panel – 8″ x 10″

Found this barn late last summer. I knew it was there, but this view had been hidden by dense foliage and underbrush. The park cleared away a lot of the growth and left this opportunity. I did a small, 8″ x 16″, plein air study of this farm, but decided to do this painting as a demonstration for my Oil / Acrylic students. Many of the class demos get wiped away (destroyed) once I get back to the studio, This one was worth keeping.

Calm Morn

Calm Morn – Oil on Canvas -22″ x 28″

During the deep cold of January, I worked this painting from a plein air sketch completed last summer. I took liberties with removal of a railroad bridge and some trees. Augmented the effect of sun pouring across the ripened fields.

October Drive and Flowers and Fence

January 5, 2018

October Drive – Watercolor on Arches 140# CP – 12″ x 16″

Used a plein air oil painting as a basis for the scene from Rock Cut State Park. Restraint needed to leave the white of the paper to help illustrate the brightness of the sunlight across the foliage and road.

An oil painting from my Cedarburg trip was the inspiration of the flowers in front of a picket fence. Would like to have been a little looser with the application of colors for the flowers. Perhaps it’s worth another try.

Autumn Willow and Pear Study

January 1, 2018

Autumn Willow – Oil on Canvas Panel – 8″ x 6″

Two more small oil paintings started as a resource for my Oil students. The willow tree is from a reference photo. The willow is at the entrance to Midway Village in Rockford. The pears were started to help my students understand methods for tackling folds in cloth. Both paintings were quickly requested by galleries for display (and sale – hopefully).
