Solace Along Country Lane and Farmington Way

January 2, 2018

Solace Along Country Lane – Watercolor on Arches 140# CP – 12″ x 16″

Two recent watercolor paintings created from plein air oil studies.

Solace Along Country Lane is an interpretation of a scene in Door County Wisconsin. I removed a lot of trees, bushes and other growth to expose the house. I added the structure in back and augmented what I could see of the rise in the background.

Farmington Way is based on a scene near Belvidere, Illinois. I added the tree on the left and cleaned up the trees and bushes around the house.

Quiet on Chrysler

Quiet on Chrysler – Plein Air – Oil on Linen Panel – 9″ x 12″

A small abandoned house sits along a frontage road. I painted the front of this house last summer. I decided to return this year with an idea for a different design. Unfortunately, the front of the house just lacked for interest. I moved to the side and found a spot where the road shifts. I would be out of the way of any traffic and liked the view offered.

A few people traveled past while I painted. Some even slowed down to see what was going on. About an hour into the painting a car rolled up from behind me. A police officer. I asked if I was causing trouble. He indicated that I was alright. He asked a few questions and then told me that the office had received a call that someone was seen changing their motor oil in the vicinity. I replied that I was working with oil paints. The officer replied that he could report that the call and visit were justified. We laughed. The officer moved on and I finished the painting.
