Awaiting

Awaiting – Oil on Canvas – 24″ x 18″

On a bright summers morn, I went for a quick walk along the nearby bay. Fortunately, I brought my small camera. Snapped a quick photo of these boats. Reviewing the mornings photos while eating breakfast, I liked the basic design which I had captured.

I seldom work from photos, but in this case, the design was there. I had to bring the distant shore down into the frame. I opted to eliminate the small outboard motors on a couple of the boats and altered a few of the boats colors. But this design is basically as I found it; or perhaps, it found me.

Despite a beautiful sunset to the west, I loved the warm effects across the foliage to the south.

It is amazing how lively “grays” can be. A fun little play with colors.

After dinner, we headed down to a park adjacent to the boat launch. Wanted to capture the sunset. Each painting completed within forty minutes.

Taking the idea to a different level. It is a challenge after working in a more standard 2:3 format (example a 30″ x 40″ canvas) and then working in a 1:2 or even a 1: 3 format. A struggle  to balance the composition and movement through the design.

Standing in front of this work really captures the feeling of the breadth of the scene. I have a 48″ x 60″ canvas sitting in the studio and I am starting to contemplate the effect of  one of these sky paintings on a canvas of that size.
