Ephraim Cottages

Ephraim Cottages – Watercolor on Arches 140# CP – 9″ x 12″

Another watercolor created for my workshop students. I started the painting with the shadows under the eaves of the cottage on the left. I continued through the middle buildings while working the trees in the background allowing the areas to bleed into each other. The juggling act continued through the cottage on the right and into the foreground. I allowed the initial wash to dry thoroughly  before I returned to add a few bolder passages.

Sunspot Along German Road – Watercolor on Arches 140# CP – 12″ x 16″

Preparing fresh images for an upcoming watercolor workshop, I played with these two designs.

Sunspot Along German Road, is a follow up to an oil painting. The work is from sketches made during a trip into Door County Wisconsin.

Klenke’s is worked from a reference photo. The site is a well known spot in Ellison Bay Wisconsin.

Waiting for Calmer Weather – Plein Air – Watercolor on Arches 140# CP – 6″ x 10″

My wife and I went to Door County Wisconsin for vacation. Our youngest was able to take a few days of vacation and joined us. Not much time reserved for painting though I managed to use open time to my advantage.

One of the days was rather cool and very windy. Wife and son decided they wanted to do some reading down at the public beach. I managed a watercolor despite the best efforts of the wind to cause disruption.

One morning we spent time at a park which overlooks a harbor. Son read and slept. Wife read. Dog slept. I captured a watercolor while a yoga class was in session nearby.

My wife took in a local farmers market and came back with a few items including a bouquet of flowers. Over the next few days, I did a couple paintings of the bouquet.

Although not a very productive trip, as far as my art was concerned, but it was very relaxing for my wife and son.

Despite a beautiful sunset to the west, I loved the warm effects across the foliage to the south.

View from Cozy Brook North – Oil on Canvas Panel – 11 x 14

As I ate breakfast, I decided on a spot to travel and paint. As I walked out of our cottage with my gear, I noticed the beautiful play of shadows and light across a neighboring cottage and changed my mind. Decided to paint this subject. Unfortunately I did not have shade and I did not have  my umbrella with me. Improvised by backing my car up to my easel, raised the hatch and threw a blanket over the window. Worked well. I painted while Clawed slept in the grass nearby and Helen enjoyed some quiet reading time.
