This design has been used successfully in several oil paintings. I opted to utilize this as another demonstration for my workshop. After doing my pencil sketch, I did all the shadows as a single, connected wash. The shadows alone make for an interesting abstract.

Sunlit in Sister Bay
September 4, 2015
Traveled to Door County for a vacation and some paint time. Decided to get up there a day early to participate in a Quick Paint competition. As usual. I saw too many fine opportunities. Decided to stick with a strength and paint this flower box display. Although the sunlight did not fall across the flowers as I had anticipated, I was happy with the my choice.

Flower Box
August 11, 2015Sorry for the lack of posts over the past couple months. My old computer finally died. Learning curve for the new computer (and software). Encountered problems with software and had to purchase new versions (again, learning curve). Then encountered problems with my digital camera. Purchased new and once again, learning curve. Still trying to get everything in sync.
Decided to work a few paintings in vertical format. Playing in my sketchbook, I came across designs which could be adjusted to work in the vertical format. Happy with this result.

3955 Stowell
October 12, 2014I received an invitation to compete in the Shorewood Plein Air Festival. Shorewood is a small community at the north end of Milwaukee Wisconsin. I enjoyed the experience last year and felt very privileged to have another opportunity to paint in this area.
I arrived at the headquarters around 9:00am, signed in, received my information packet and got my canvases stamped for the competition. While there, I decided to pick the brains of the women volunteers. I was interested in looking at some of the historic homes for my subject matter. I was directed towards Stowell Avenue on the east end of town. As I traveled the street, I found loads of potential subject matter. I decided to get a quick little painting done before lunchtime. This flower box caught my eye.
While painting, I was visited by several passers-by. They all knew about the event and expressed their gratitude that so many artists were in their town. The Plein Air committee really did the job of getting word out in the community.
Great to begin a three day competition with a good start.
