Hoisington’s Post Harvest; Oil on Gessoed Paper 6″ x 8″

My painting, Hoisington’s Post Harvest, has been accepted into the Lake County Heritage Foundation: Images from the Heartland Exhibition. The works will be displayed in the Lake County Discovery Museum at Lakewood Forest Preserve August 25 through November 4, 2012.

Hoisington’s Post Harvest is my response to a visit at the farm owned by one of my watercolor students. I was on location, gathering sketches and painted studies of their farm buildings. I took a break to walk through the woods and fields toward the cliffs which overlook the Rock River, but paused to enjoy this moment. The sunlight hitting the recently harvested field, revealed colors and patterns that begged to be painted.

Although some see autumn as a cold prelude to the forthcoming winter, I see it as a wonderful opportunity to respond to the sun light, as beautiful warm tones of the quickly changing Midwestern foliage are displayed.
